Inktober: Week 2

Week 1

I just finished last weekends drawings last night, so yeah; that’s why this is late.

Day 16-17

Ideally I would have posted this on Sunday, but school and freelancing got busy and I was having trouble deciding what to draw.

I’m not particularly proud of any of these, but I think the way day 11 came out is interesting. It was probably the first time that I used my thicker pens and didn’t regret it.

Also, the last four days, which I did last night, are (partially) inked with my new Copic 0.03 tip pen. It’s really nice for details and small drawings at about half the size of my previously smallest pen. I wish I had it when I did day 12 to maybe make some grass or something to fill in the ground.

Anywho, that’s it for this week. Thanks for reading, and make sure to like and follow if you enjoyed my content.

Thanks,

-Josh M

Inktober: Week 1

An illustrator named Jake Parker started Inktober in 2009 as a personal challenge to improve his inking skills. Today, thousands of artists do the daily challenge by making ink drawings every day for the whole month of October. Here’s more information: http://mrjakeparker.com/about

I decided to give Inktober a shot this year, only to find out I had no idea what I was doing. I struggled through the first five drawings, pretty much hating everything I drew.

I got some blue lead for my mechanical pencil and began to see improvement. I was having problems with the underdrawing with my normal lead since I had to erase it afterwards and it made nasty marks on the paper around the ink. Plus blue is better for drafting, as it lets me develop the lines more, rather than the finality of the darker lead.

Day 9: Bunny bounty-hunter

There actually is a prompt list for each day of the month, but I only used a couple of them and sort of deviated into a fantasy animal theme, which I may or may not continue.

If I’ve learned anything about inking, it would be that less is more. Many of ink drawings are ruined by unnecessary blocks of shading, or lines that are too thick by contrast. That said, you have to add a certain amount of contrast, or the drawing will appear boring, for example, my first inking of day 9:

It’s not a great example, as the fur does help, but hopefully you see what I mean.

Anyway, I’m happy with my progress and can’t wait to see where I am at the end of the month. Feel free to give me suggestions in the comments for future Inktober drawings. Don’t forget to like this post if you did, and follow if you want to see more.

Until next week, thanks for reading!

Day 76- Sasquatch (Speed Painting Time-Lapse)

Sasquatch final

Prompt: A Sasquatch sighting in an unusual location

Iv’e been watching and studying speed painting for a couple days now and decided to give it a go. So, I spent most of the day making brushes, then recorded the painting. I’m semi-happy with the results. I definitely need more practice, and I plan on doing much more in the future. As for the time, it really wasn’t much of a speed painting. I was planning on doing half an hour at max, but it took me a little over an hour instead.

Day 75- Rescue at last

Out of control

I haven’t posted for like a week now. The last poll was “Thank goodness they finally sent someone. Things are getting out of control!”. And I had no idea what I would do. So, this morning I just sat down a started sketching. This is what I ended up with. I added the 2 streak lens flares to give the picture more of a sci fi look.

Day 74- From the Sea, Beasts Awoke.

Alright, so, I painted this today from the prompt “From the sea, beasts awoke”, which was one of the options in the last poll. I’m still not too great at water, but I would say what I did here is acceptable.

Also, I updated the front page of my site yesterday, along with a bunch of other pages. They should look a good deal nicer. I updated my video as well, which is linked to though a button on the front page. You can see it on my youtube channel here.

Day 73- Freedom Pants

So, there was a three way tie in the poll yesterday, but there was also one “other” which was: Freedom pants” I have no idea who typed that… *cough*yesido*cough* But since there was a tie, I felt I had no other choice. So here it is, freedom pants. And I’de like to note that I mean no disrespect to the original picture.

Today the poll is the three drawings that tied yesterday. Also, don’t forget to follow!

Day 72- Like music on the waters

Like music on the waters

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This is relatively my first time painting water, liquid even, and I like how it came out. That’s why I put the extra pic of just the water above. I’m not too happy with the cloud dude, and I’m just now realizing I put way too much detail into him. I should have painted him more vaguely.

Day 71- An act of dedication

An act of dedication

So, I had this whole animation planned out, but after drawing, like, the first fifteen frames of the first scene, I gave up and did this sketch instead. I drew that sheep five times and I’m still not happy with it 😦 , oh well. Please vote on the poll below for tomorrow’s drawing! Also, don’t forget to follow to see what comes next.

Day 69- Anthophobia (Fear of Flowers)

Anthophobia

Again, nothing special. Just a quick sketch with some color thrown on top.

This poll is a little different. I only put two answers, and an other. I wan’t to something more involved tomorrow, not just a simple cartoon character:

Day 68- Neophobia (the fear of new things)

When looking for things to put on yesterdays poll, I came across and “random phobia lister” I picked out neophobia and put it in the poll, I had an idea in my head of what I would do the whole time. Since it was voted for, I got to draw my idea today. It was really quick and simple, with a new character style I decided to try. I like how most of it turned out, but the kid in the corner could definently have more emotion.

Here’s the poll for tomorrow:
